Why Mexico Continues to Be One of Canada's Favourite Vacation Destinations
If you're dreaming of warm sunshine, white-sand beaches, crystal-clear water, and a week where someone else does the cooking, it's hard to beat an all-inclusive vacation in Mexico.
With direct flights from many Canadian cities, beautiful resorts, incredible food, and destinations to suit every type of traveller, Mexico continues to be one of the easiest and most affordable tropical vacations for Canadians.
But with hundreds of resorts, countless room categories, and so many destinations to choose from, planning the right vacation can quickly become overwhelming.
One of the questions I'm asked most often is:
"Which resort should we book?"
The truth is, there isn't one perfect answer.
The best resort isn't necessarily the most expensive or the highest rated—it's the one that best fits your vacation style.
Whether you're travelling as a couple, with young children, celebrating a milestone, or planning a multi-generational family getaway, here's what I recommend considering before booking.
Start by Choosing the Right Destination
Many people begin by comparing resorts, but I always recommend choosing your destination first.
Each region of Mexico offers something a little different.
Riviera Maya
If you're travelling with children or looking for a larger resort with plenty of amenities, Riviera Maya is one of my favourite recommendations. You'll find beautiful beaches, family-friendly resorts, eco-parks, cenotes, Mayan ruins, and countless excursions within easy reach.
Cancun
Cancun is ideal if you want a shorter airport transfer, beautiful turquoise beaches, and easy access to shopping and nightlife. It's a great option for couples, friends, and first-time visitors to Mexico.
Puerto Vallarta
For travellers looking for a more authentic Mexican experience, Puerto Vallarta offers charming streets, incredible sunsets, mountain scenery, and excellent restaurants. It has a completely different feel from the Caribbean coast.
Los Cabos
If you're looking for luxury, golf, incredible desert scenery, or a romantic escape, Los Cabos is always worth considering.
Choosing the right destination first makes narrowing down resorts much easier.
Not Every All-Inclusive Resort Is the Same
Many travellers assume that if two resorts have the same star rating, they'll offer the same experience.
In reality, that's rarely the case.
Some resorts are designed for families with water parks, splash pads, kids' clubs, and endless activities.
Others focus on couples, offering quieter pools, gourmet dining, and adults-only spaces.
Even within the same destination, every resort has its own personality.

Understanding Room Categories Can Save You Money (Or Make Your Vacation Better)
One of the biggest mistakes I see is travellers choosing the cheapest room simply because they assume they'll only be sleeping there.
Sometimes that's the right choice.
Sometimes spending just a little more dramatically improves your experience.
Here are a few common room categories you'll come across:
Garden View rooms overlook tropical gardens and landscaped grounds and are often the best value.
Ocean View rooms provide beautiful views of the Caribbean and are perfect if waking up to the ocean is important to you.
Swim-Up Suites allow you to step directly into a pool from your private terrace and are ideal for couples or anyone wanting a more luxurious stay.
Many resorts also offer upgraded room categories such as Premium, Club, Golden, or Platinum. These often include perks like preferred room locations, exclusive pools, private beach areas, concierge service, premium beverages, and priority restaurant reservations.
Sometimes those upgrades are well worth the extra cost—and sometimes they aren't. It really depends on your travel style, which is why I always compare the value before recommending an upgrade.
When Should You Book?
One of the biggest misconceptions is that waiting until the last minute always results in the best deal. Booking 6-12 months ahead is recommended.
While last-minute deals do exist, they usually come with limited flight options and fewer room choices.
If you're travelling during:
Spring Break
Christmas
Easter
School holidays
Or with a large family or group
booking early is almost always the better option.
Early booking promotions often provide better pricing, the widest selection of room categories, and the best flight schedules.
Travel Insurance Is Worth Every Penny
I never recommend travelling without insurance.
Unexpected things happen—even on the best-planned vacations.
Travel insurance can help protect you if you need to cancel your trip, experience flight disruptions, lose your luggage, or require emergency medical care while travelling.
It's one of those things you hope you'll never need—but you'll be grateful to have if something unexpected happens.

What Should You Pack?
Packing for an all-inclusive vacation doesn't have to be complicated.
Besides your passport and travel documents, I always recommend bringing:
Reef-safe sunscreen
A reusable water bottle
A waterproof phone pouch
Packing cubes
A portable charger
Comfortable sandals
A light sweater for evenings
A dry bag for beach days
Any prescription medications

Purchase travel insurance before you travel.
Review any travel advisories or entry requirements for your destination.
